If you click on the chatroom button and are taken to the BBS, try the following link instead: http://www.southparkstudios.com/fans/chat -- this is a known problem.

You may alternatively decide to use our own IRC client, such as mIRC for Windows or iRC for Mac OS X. Our server name is irc.aquaria.org (port 6667) and you can find us in #sps

In order to use the version on the site, you need to have Java installed. You will be prompted for permission to connect -- you must accept in order to use this.

Common Problems with the Web ClientThere are a number of possible culprits, the most likely lately being a firewall. If that is not the case, you may want to try updating your version of Java (http://www.java.com/) or simply reboot.

Firewall directions from und.edu:
"Unable to connect : java.net.SocketException : Software caused connection abort: Connect." Huh?!
This message pops up in the chat screen, PJIRC, when a firewall or other security software is preventing the applet from talking to the IRC server. In other words, your computer anti-virus software, or Windows firewall software is attempting to "protect you" from the chat system.

We commonly see this problem with Windows XP firewall, Zone Alarm, or other anti-virus software with a built in firewall. Also, if you are accessing chat via a corporate intranet or some similar network, often times IRC traffic will be blocked by a network firewall. In this case, please talk to your network administrator.

However, there are a couple of things you can try on your own computer, that may resolve the problem. Try one of these fixes at a time, and stop when chat is functioning. Please read on.

How to open Port 6667 in McAfee VirusScan Software (for WinXP users):

Step 1. Right-click the McAfee icon in your system tray (near the clock on your screen).
Step 2. Choose "VirusScan Console."
Step 3. Double click "Access Protection."
Step 4. In the listing of blocked services, DESELECT the checkbox next to "Prevent IRC communication" for OUTBOUND traffic.
Step 5. Click "OK."

How to open Port 6667 in WinXP firewall:

Step 1. Click the "Start" menu.
Step 2. Choose "Control Panel."
Step 3. Choose "Windows Firewall."
Step 4. Click the "Exceptions" tab.
Step 5. Click the "Add Port" button.
Step 6. Type "IRC" into the name box. Type "6667" into the Port Number box. Click "OK.

I don't know what happened to me tonight. I was trying to write "'k" but accidentally hit the quotations and shift key together. Next thing I know, I was bumped off, and had to sign back in. :?

Edit: let me clarify; somehow, the chat window (in fact the whole page) disappeared, and I found myself looking at a blank page. I had to close my browser, open it back up, and come back to the site.

Ok, so why would I be seeing this:

on a Vista computer with Java 6.2? Am I missing some other vital application, or is the Chat just not working right now?

Calm down, calm down. Now, what I did on that Vista machine I had (loaner) was download the mIRC client that Nall mentioned. I was able to use it to chat even when the South Park Studios interface didn't work. Try that next.

....who uses McAfee anymore?

Also, remember that mIRC isn't the only application that you can use for IRC connections. There are also various open-source aplications, such as Visual IRC, X-Chat, Konversation (only works with Linux and other X-Windows-based operating systems that can support the K Desktop Environment (KDE)), MegaIRC (portable flash drive client), and a few others. Users of Trilian, Gaim/Pidgin and the like can also connect to IRC networks. Many of those programs work on multiple OS platforms. They're good because mIRC carries a proprietary license that requires perches of the software for unrestricted use, and some people may be too cheap to buy it, and too lazy/unknowing to crack it, which is understandable. Christ, if you have f*cking Unreal Tournament 2004, you can use IT'S built-in IRC client to hook up to #sps! :D

Needless to say, you have various options to pick from and fall back on, should one or the other fail you.

My problem is when I click on Fans/Chat, I get this message in Safari on a Mac:

"This applet was signed by "Philippe Detournay," but Java cannot verify the authenticity of the signature's certificate. Do you trust this certificate?"

Then I can choose: "Trust - to run this applet and allow it unrestricted access to your computer."

or

"Don't Trust - to run this applet with standard Java restrictions."

Clicking on "Don't Trust" I get an error message that the app won't run under standard Java.

Clicking on "Trust" gives me a similar message.

Note: All of my software is up to date.

Also, in looking at the error message, I see that Philippe Detournay's certificate expired on Thursday, November 2, 2006 -- that's 25 months ago!

It was made by Global Sign Primary Object Publishing, CA

Maybe it is the "expired" status of the Philippe Detornay's certificate is giving my computer problems with joining the SPS chat room? I have no problem on other chat rooms.

Thank you.

Just because a license is expired doesn't mean the software will stop working. The java chat applet here still works for me.

But maybe my computer doesn't like expired applets? When I say "computer" I mean my Mac OSX Leepard software, my firewalls, or my Norton Anti-Virus.

OK, I'll keep trying to get it to work. Thanks, Will

I have Pidgin. Can you tell me how would I need to configure it to use the chat room?
