When Cartman confronts Chef about being his son they both have a conversation. In this conversation, Chef repeatedly refers to Cartman as "children" when Cartman is clearly one child.

Yeah, I never quite got that myself. I dunno if Trey wrote it that way because that was how the guy they based Chef on talked, or if there was some sort of miscommunication between them and Issac over who he was addressing. They did used to direct him over the phone after all.

Hayes did all his lines from New York. Trey probably changed the scenes after getting Hayes' readings and couldn't get a hold of him in time for him to read the corrected lines.

Or Hayes' made Chef always talk in the plural, whether he was talking to many "children" or one child. I always thought "children" was the word Chef would use even if addressing only one child.

From all the episodes I've seen, Chef has always referred to him or any other single chid as children's. That's really just how Chef talks.

yeah, this was definately NOT a mistake. Chef's dad talks the same way. In the episode "Biggest Douchebag in the Universe," chef's dad is addressing Cartman directly and asks chef, "Is this the children you were talking about"... of course, Kenny's soul was in Cartman at the time, but I think that's just how the characters speak.

Yes. But there was a first time, and my explanation is about that first time. After that, it was worked into the show as part of Chef's charm.

That IS how chef talks. I remember one time he addressed a group of women as "children". Can't remember the episode.

Sure there was a first time, but that doesn't mean the first time was a blooper. Almost nothing in SP is "propper," and Cartman only says "Seriously," never serious. Each character has a quirk. It doesn't make it a mistake.

That's not a mistake. It's just them making a joke about Chef's "cookie-cutter" opening dialogue.
Chef: "Hello children"
Kids: "Hey Chef"
Chef: "How's it goin'?"
Kids: "Bad"
Chef: "Why bad?"
