It seems they originally grew bored of him and attempted to replace him with Butters/Tweek because he can't contribute a whole lot to a story besides being a dirty little bastard.

They recently added a lot more depth to him by making him Mysterion, but I would love to see him ditch the orange hood and his become a normal kid. That's just me though.

I agree, but it's a shame since Kenny looks to have a really interesting background story. But because of the limitations placed on him in the begining, they (M&T) needed to have Butters step-up to a main charactor and do the things Kenny can't do. And Butters has his own limitations, so other kids like Clyde, Craig, Token, etc get time as fill ins also.
