The kid died because the episode was a parody of all the ice hockey films made, where the team always win and it saves some kid with cancer's life because they had belief in the game. So it was a twist on a normal ice hockey movie. It's like the whole asspen episode, where they make fun of crappy skiing movies for teens. It's really quite funny how they take the piss outta it. You obviously didn't listen to what Stan said with the whole: "According to every ice hockey movie I've seen, we should win this."
