I really don't know why so many fans say this episode is one of the best. Of course it was funny but it's not exactly how the show is now. What I mean is, they were still testing things out, didn't yet develop the characters. Things like that. The crappy animation is funny. It's just the little underdeveloped things about it that weren't so funny. I think all first episodes of shows need some tweaking. For some reason I've never found 'kick the baby' funny. What I do love however... was from the very beginning, Mr. Garrison was a rude, gay teacher! Haha!! 
I love: Stan, Butters, Cartman, Sharon.
I ship: Stan/Cartman <3
Stan: MMOOMM!!
Sharon: What is it honey? (gasp!) My baby's killed again!

I think that's exactly why I love this episode. It has a lot of classic moments, sure, but it also set the path of most of the characters in motion. This was the episode that decided Kyle would be the protective brother, Stan would be in love with Wendy, Kenny would die, and Cartman would be an assh*le with a mom that spoiled him. That's what's so classic about this episode. Looking at them back then as they were, and now knowing how they would turn out...

^ Very true but it still seems kinda sketchy at some moments. I think the show was getting its roots down by the 5th episode of the season or so.
