Hope to see him back in future episodes, he brings a lot of depth to Kenny's character. I also love the Kewn :)

Actually, it's the other way around. The Necronomicon and Cthulu are inventions of the SciFi/Horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. He introduced Cthulu in another book entitled: The Call of Cthulu, which is the title of another Metallica song.
In addition, the song you're thinking of, The Thing That Should Not Be, is about another of H.P. Lovecraft's works, The Shadow over Innsmouth. The inspiration for incorporating these into Metallica's music came from the bassist, Clif Burton (RIP), who was a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft's books. So there. 8)
